Fazer celebrating its 120th anniversary on 17 September

On 17 September 1891, young Karl Fazer made his dream come true by opening a café at Kluuvikatu 3 in Helsinki. The young man was slightly nervous – would the Finnish customers find their way to the café to sample the delicacies the confectioner had created? In 120 years, Fazer has grown from the small café on Kluuvikatu to a successful global enterprise of 16,500 employees.

‘I can only image how excited my great-grandfather Karl Fazer must have been when he opened the doors at Kluuvikatu 3 for the first time. He had decided to pursue his dream, sought training abroad and got a bank loan to open up a café,’ Majlen Fazer says.

‘I believe Karl Fazer and my grandfather Sven Fazer would be really proud of the company’s success and growth. My father Peter Fazer was one of the people who drove Fazer’s global growth process, and I’m sure he would be very satisfied to see what Fazer has become. Our deeply rooted traditions continue to support us today, and our work to create taste sensations continues,’ Majlen Fazer sums up.

Taste sensations and well-being

Today, Fazer is still a family business that upholds the traditions of Karl Fazer in creating new taste sensations; high quality and responsibility continue to be the cornerstones of operations. What makes Fazer so unique are its beloved brands, good employer reputation and a strong market position, even on an international scale. ‘Approximately half of our turnover is generated abroad, and that’s where our growth efforts are also focused,’ explains Karsten Slotte, President of Fazer Group.

‘Our vision is to be the best choice for our interest groups in terms of products and as an employer and a responsible corporate citizen. We are pleased to offer well-being and taste sensations to people every day – for example, we meet nearly half a million customers in our restaurants every day. Renewal and innovation are also important – the new Fazer Local Bakeries were created in response to consumer demands for warm, freshly baked bread,’ Slotte says.

The story of Fazer began in a café, and in October of the anniversary year Fazer will open a new café in Helsinki city centre.
