Responsible sourcing

The safety and responsibility of the production chain are ensured in co-operation with suppliers.

Supplier monitoring

As a part of its corporate responsibility, Fazer monitors the quality, origin and responsibility of the supply chain of the materials and ingredients it uses. Since the 1990’s; Fazer has applied a process in which information about suppliers is systematically gathered before selection and approval.

Auditing potential suppliers is part of the process, and the purpose of the audit is to assess the level of the supplier’s performance regarding production, quality and environmental issues. Supplier monitoring was enhanced in 2009 by introducing a separate questionnaire. Currently, these questions are part of the normal supplier approval process.

Palm oil

The proportion of RSPO (Roundtable of Sustainable Palm Oil) certified palm oil was 66 per cent in 2011. To support the sustainable production of palm oil, Fazer has made a decision to begin to use only RSPO-certified palm oil by the end of 2012.

Fish and fish products

As part of its responsibility programme, Fazer has been using the WWF Seafood Guide as a basis for choosing fish since 2010. Fazer’s restaurants in Finland, Sweden and Denmark no longer use fish or seafood species included on the red list. Fazer is working all the time to increase the proportion of fish included on the green list. In Finland, as an example, the target is to double the share of green-listed fish in restaurants’ fish procurement by 2015.

WWF updates the recommendations in the Seafood guide for consumers every year. The latest update for Finland came out in February 2012. Fazer implements the changes in its assortment and menus starting from the first possible assortment period.

Cocoa

Fazer’s cocoa sourcing strategy defines the criteria for responsible cocoa sourcing which are based on developing traceability and principles specified by the World Cocoa Foundation. Fazer is committed to increasing the share of cocoa raw material which fulfills the criteria each year by 10 to 15 per cent, depending on availability and market situation. By 2017 Fazer aims to achieve full traceability of the cocoa raw material it purchases. In 2011, certified cocoa accounted for 19 per cent of all purchased cocoa raw material. Fazer’s objective is to use only cocoa that fills the requirements for responsible cocoa sourcing by 2017.
