The cocoa fruit grows straight from the tree trunk, just as the tree’s many white flowers do. One cocoa tree produces about 20 to 30 cocoa pods per crop. One cocoa pod contains 25 to 40 seeds or cocoa beans.
Fazer makes chocolate from processed cocoa products purchased from European suppliers: cocoa mass, cocoa butter and cocoa powder. Two thirds of the cocoa in Karl Fazer Milk Chocolate comes from Equador, which is the most important factor affecting its taste.
In Ecuador, it is possible to trace the origin of the cocoa down to the area where it was grown. About twenty-five per cent of our cocoa comes from Ecuador and seventy-five per cent from West Africa.

We are aware of the challenges in cocoa farms and want to do our share in improving the conditions of cocoa farms and cultivator communities – that is why we have been member of the World Cocoa Foundation since 2005 and co-operate with international actors in the cocoa and chocolate industry.
The purpose of the World Cocoa Foundation is to promote responsible cocoa farming, increase the farmers’ income levels and support cocoa cultivators and their families.
An important part of the work is to ensure that the children and teenagers of farmers' families go to school.
Fazer is a village sponsor in Ivory Coast
We support the village Biéby in Ivory Coast through the ECHOES(Empowering Cocoa Households with Educational Solutions) programme. The aim is to provide the youth in the cultivator community with vocational training in cocoa cultivation in connection with other school education.
Traditionally, cocoa cultivation is passed from one generation to the next by working, and many children who grow up in cocoa farms and farmer communities become cocoa farmers when they grow up.
By the end of 2011, 560 young people in Biéby have received training in cocoa cultivation, and 100,200 cocoa trees have been planted on 55 new cocoa farms.
It is important to us to visit the countries of origin of cocoa – our representatives have visited Ghana, Ecuador, Ivory Coast and Nigeria to get acquainted with the supply chain of cocoa.
The future of chocolate
The criteria for responsible cocoa sourcing are traceability and the principles of the World Cocoa Foundation: Profit, People and Planet.
We are committed to increasing the purchase amounts of raw material that meets the criteria for responsible cocoa sourcing by 10 to 15 per cent on an annual basis
Our goal is that by 2017 all our cocoa will meet these criteria.
